This new 340,500-SF facility encompasses a specialty lobby; outpatient services; library; education and conference center; ambulance and loading docks; ICU/CCU and step-down telemetry units; patient care units; non-clinical spaces; mechanical/electrical equipment rooms; and connections to the existing hospital. The project also expands Christiana Care Health System's cardiovascular program with an integrated suite of cardiac and vascular interventional rooms.
The patient tower, which adds 172 private inpatient beds that can expand to 204 beds at peak census, also features a 26-bed CCICU, a 26-bed MICU, and two 30-bed medical-surgical floors with operational flexibility to flex to 38. A decentralized nursing concept is facilitated by three nurses’ stations at the corners of a triangular support core.
Due to the specialized nature of the building type and the need for phased construction, the client charged Skanska with providing technical consultation during the design phase and with providing organization and direction of construction activities during the construction phase.
