Skanska is currently providing preconstruction and construction management services to Stamford Hospital for their Five Year Renovation and Construction Program. To date, nine projects have been completed or are in construction, with another 8 to 12 projects planned over the next three years. The projects range from a 44,000 sf fit-out of outpatient clinical space, to construction of a new pulmonary unit and construction of a state of the art cardiovascular.

One specialty project included the installation of the first CyberKnife operating suite in the area. The CyberKnife System is the world’s first and only radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body with sub-milliliter accuracy. This state of the art equipment includes the Synchrony system, which permits higher doses of radiation to be used, leading to more effective eradication of tumors and a higher success rate.

The Synchrony system simultaneously tracks both the movement of the tumor and breathing patterns of the patient. The robotic arm adjusts and automatically compensates for these movements, ensuring more accurate treatment and eliminating the need for patients to hold their breath during the delivery of radiation, resulting in a more accurate and comfortable procedure. With Synchrony precision, tumors near the heart and lungs can be treated and patients who have lung, pancreas, liver and other soft tissue tumors can now be treated in less time. Treatment sessions are shorter and much easier on patients.Unlike traditional radiosurgery systems that only treat tumors in the head, the CyberKnife System can treat both intracranial and extracranial tumors. In fact, extracranial treatments currently represent more than 50 percent of CyberKnife System procedures in the United States, including those of the spine, lung, prostate, liver and pancreas. The CyberKnife System provides an additional option for many patients diagnosed with previously inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or patients who may be looking for an alternative to surgery.
