Skanska provided preconstruction and construction management at risk services for the complete renovation of Aetna Life Insurance’s corporate headquarters campus in Hartford. The project involved the demolition of existing elements including old gypsum board partitions, various ceiling assemblies, escalators, etc., installation of new gypsum board, offices, conference rooms, and various support function rooms with all new finishes and complete demolition and upgrade of all mechanical, electrical, fire protection, plumbing and telecommunications systems as well as complete upgrade of twenty four toilet rooms. An existing bank of escalators was demolished and replaced with three new traction passenger elevators. Four new large, twenty five foot square skylights were also installed to introduce natural light into Level B. The heartbeat of the project was the installation of the new HVAC systems. The project incorporated innovative Uninterrupted Power Supply units, Leibert room air conditioning units, automatic transfer switches, battery string back up power systems, phone and voice over IP system components, fiber optic backbones, coaxial cabling, and category 6 station cabling. The entire building is set up for wireless networking and also contains an abundance of brand new flat screen LCD displays, ceiling mounted projectors and copy camera systems, electronic conference room scheduling units, and electronic white boards, all of which are state of the art technology. The project incorporates green technology including solar panels on the roof which are expected to generate 6-8% of the building’s electrical supply.
