St. George Intermodal Ferry Terminal Phase II

  • St. George Intermodal Ferry Terminal Phase II
  • St. George Intermodal Ferry Terminal Phase II

The St. George Ferry Terminal, at the northeastern tip of Staten Island serves as an intermodal transportation center. Phase I of the project addressed the upgrade of the physical condition of the facility.

As construction manager for Phase II of the Modernization Project, Skanska improved and enhanced the transportation and ancillary functions and services of the ferry terminal.

The project created new commercial retail within and adjacent to the main waiting terminal and improved the facility’s operations and brought the building and its systems up to code.

A key challenge on the project was maintaining the operations so as to protect the safety of the 60,000 passengers moving in and around the terminal. Our project team took carefully phased and coordinated activities to minimize disruption. The main focus was not to disturb the waiting room areas for the passengers. We built a temporary waiting room for the passengers as we demolished the existing one to create a new one. Communication was a key factor in this project – to keep everyone at the NYCEDC informed on all planned construction activities.
