Skanska completed the new Nashville Main Public Library located on Church Street in the heart of Downtown. The building’s Romanesque design by Robert A.M. Stern and local architect Hart Freeland Roberts is marked by 33-foot stone ionic columns and three sets of custom-sculptured bronze doors that are aligned with the main entrance to the Tennessee State Capital Building. The exterior of the building is composed of limestone and granite with brick accents.
Upon entering the library, patrons are greeted by a monumental grand staircase and a 17’-tall custom chandelier. The interior of the building is complete with high-end finishes throughout. Local artists showcase their work in the building’s galleries and exhibit areas, and there is also retail space, offices and research areas for the library staff.
The courtyard area behind the building is complete with stone benches, a large fountain and extensive landscaping. The new building, along with the 200-space parking deck, occupies a full city block.
