Sustainability and green
An innovative and welcoming community hospital
As Gothenburg’s population continues to grow, so does the demand for healthcare. To expand capacity and ease the pressure on Sahlgrenska University Hospital, a decision was made to build a new hospital in Västra Frölunda. The existing facilities at Frölunda Specialist Hospital were outdated, worn, and too small.
In 2018, Skanska was commissioned to construct a new hospital building and a supply facility totaling approximately 27,300 square meters. The project also included a garage with 175 parking spaces.
Högsbo local hospital is a region-wide initiative led by Västfastigheter, Sjukhusen i väster, Regionservice and VGR IT.
Five-storey building
The new five-storey hospital houses operating rooms, reception areas, imaging and sampling units, and is built on the site of the former Högsbo hospital.
Innovation and forward-thinking are central to Högsbo’s identity. The hospital aims to challenge traditional models of local healthcare delivery
Construction began in 2019
Skanska began the project in 2019 by demolishing three existing buildings on the site. In total, 25,000 cubic meters of rock were blasted to make room for the new facility.
Despite being located in the heart of an active healthcare area, construction ran smoothly. Weekly updates were shared with nearby healthcare units to keep them informed of any disruptions.
Thoughtful design for patients and staff
Designed by Sweco Architects, the hospital prioritizes accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere. Patient and staff pathways are separated, with the reception area serving as the main point of contact.
Patients check themselves in upon arrival, which places high demands on the layout. Clear signage and intuitive navigation help guide visitors to the correct destination. The separation of spaces also allows staff to carry out non-confidential tasks in open areas, away from patients. Supplies are delivered via the basement, and wards are restocked outside of regular hours.
Built for flexibility and the future
Högsbo community hospital is designed with adaptability in mind. All treatment rooms and operating rooms follow a standardized layout, making it easier to accommodate new technologies and changing needs over time.
Art that inspires
In all construction projects of Region Västra Götaland’s a portion of the budget is dedicated to art. At Högsbo the goal is to create an environment that helps patients focus on something beyond illness. The artwork is given prominent space and is created specifically for the hospital.
Early climate impact assessment.
To minimize environmental impact, a climate assessment was conducted early in the planning process and followed up during construction. Wherever possible, materials with a lower climate footprint were chosen, including concrete and reinforcement
During demolition reuse was prioritized, we worked with reuse. Bricks were salvaged for use in other projects, and rubble was repurposed in gabions around the garage.
Certified for sustainability
The hospital is certified at the Silver level according to Miljöbyggnad environmental standard. Based on sixteen indicators for energy use, indoor climat and materials, the certification ensures the building supports both human health and environmental sustainability. and the environment.
