We redeveloped two major London hospitals for the Barts Health NHS Trust, and now provide facilities management and estates services to both.

This was one of our largest ever construction projects in the UK.

Helping shape the future of two world-class hospitals

The redevelopment of Barts hospital and the Royal London hospital, completed in 2016, created state-of-the-art facilities to meet the short and long-term needs of patients and clinicians.

The project involved the rebuild and refurbishment of both hospitals.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital

The trust has consolidated previously widespread hospital operations in a single, purpose-built location.

Barts is a cardiac and cancer centre of excellence for London, providing 290 beds, supported by over 2,200 staff.

Built in a conservation area, on a site that has been home to a medical facility for some 900 years, it has been transformed into a state-of-the-art hospital, serving people in the capital and beyond.

The hospital remained fully operational throughout its transformation.

Royal London Hospital

The Royal London is the principal trauma care centre for the city and the home base for London's Air Ambulance service. It is home to the largest renal care unit in Europe and the city’s second-largest paediatric specialist unit.

The hospital, in east London, has 746 bed spaces, a specialist women and children's centre, and an accident and emergency treatment facility.

Facilities management

We are providing facilities management services to the hospitals in the trust until 2048.

This includes maintaining specialist medical equipment, such as oxygen supplies. Our team of engineers is highly skilled and supports the work of frontline medical staff.

We also maintain the fabric of the buildings, providing a range of mechanical and electrical engineering expertise. We also carry out statutory inspections.

Waste management

We helped the Barts Health NHS Trust become the first trust in the UK to be awarded the Carbon Trust standard for waste management.

Waste management is important in a clinical setting. There are many different types of waste that are produced by hospitals, and strict guidelines for each type that dictate how it needs to be disposed of.

Our approach – including a behavioural change programme – has enabled the trust to save significant amounts of money, reduce the environmental impact of the waste produced and cut carbon emissions.

We also helped the trust win a Green Apple award, for the innovative use of a reverse-vending machine to help recycle plastic bottles and metal drink cans.
