The Karsudden Regional Hospital, outside Katrineholm, is Sweden’s largest forensic psychology care facility. Skanska is refurbishing and extending the facility as part of a program to improve security, as well as the residential and work environment. Karsudden was built in the 1960s. Since then, only minor renovations have been conducted, leading to the dilapidation of the premises.
The first stage commenced in October 2013. An old canteen was demolished to make way for a new building. This is now the administration center, permitting it to come closer to operations. This building also comprises two floors with facilities for patients. Two buildings have been refurbished and all of them are now interconnected. The personnel have a shared canteen and the patient rooms are larger. The idea is to make it easier to move between various parts of the hospital. The transport of food, goods and pharmaceuticals has also been simplified.
Construction work is ongoing while patients continue to live the building next to the worksite, which entails that workplace security is extremely important. We have special procedural rules in terms of tools, vehicles and contacts with patients. In addition, we must get extracts from the Swedish Criminal Records for everybody working on the site.
Security at Karsudden has been improved as a result of our actions. The windows and walls in patient rooms comply with very exacting security requirements.
Further work will be conducted when we have finished with the buildings. We plan to transform a large asphalt parking space to a green square, replace water and sewage mains, and conduct detailed planning as well as moving exercise grounds.
We also have an option on Stage 2, which involves the continuing renovation of Karsudden. A political decision is required for the completion of this stage.

Skanska has been commissioned by the Sörmland County Council to renovate and extend the Karsudden Regional Hospital. We aim to raise security and improve the work and living environment. One building will be demolished and replaced by a new structure. Two buildings will be renovated and linked together with the new building. The newly constructed section is almost 9,000 square meters and the rebuild involves more than 4,000 square meters. All the buildings have three floors.
We won a public tender in 2013, with Stage 1 planned for completion in 2016. The project is a design-construct assignment in cooperation with other players. This entails that Skanska and the customer have a shared view of the project and offer transparent accounting. There are incentives if we attain certain goals, from which both the county council and we profit. Thanks to a clear dialog, this cooperative venture is functioning very well.
The work began in November 2013 with the demolition of an old canteen, which made way for a new building for administration, security unit and in-house patients. This was followed by site work. Muddy ground involves a good deal of piling. The new brick-faced buildings match the style of the older buildings, although in lighter shades. We do the plastering work on-site in an effort to gain a more attractive façade.
We are conducting the work while patients continue to live at the facility, which means that security is extremely important. The management at Karsudden has given us special procedural rules: Cars must not be parked with keys still in the ignition and we must lock up all tools when we take a break. Also, we have instructions as to how to behave in the event of unexpected encounters with patients. All employees earmarked to work on the project must study a document that covers all these instructions.
We must provide extracts from the Swedish Criminal Records for everybody working on the site. No employee should have been involved in violent or drug crime if they are to work here. In practice, this means we must plan well in advance in terms of the competencies and the subcontractors we intend to use. It can take up to three weeks to get an extract from the Swedish Criminal Records!
Security at the Karsudden Regional Hospital is being improved as a result of the measures we are undertaking. The windows in patient rooms meet very high security requirements. Many inner walls are bullet proof, with a great deal of steel plating, making it difficult to break in or out.
Windows and walls are very heavy. They are mounted from the inside and, thus, we have hoisting equipment to put them in place.
We have divided up the work into three stages to enable the operations to move patients. When the first building is completed in January 2015, the patients will move into it. When they have moved, we will strip the building to its structural elements and rebuild it. When this building is completed, the patients will move in from the next building. And we then renovate that particular one.
Meanwhile, we are connecting the houses with each other. The exterior roof is to be removed and a new roof built to connect with the roof on the new section. Currently, there is an underground passage that people use while we work. We have daily contact with a project manager at Karsudden, who informs us when people must pass through, during which period we take a break.
Stage 1 will be completed in August 2016. Subsequently, we hope to continue with Stage 2, for which we have an option. This would involve an additional two buildings that would be linked together with the three from Stage 1.
