Selected for the 2014 Super Bowl
The 2014 Super Bowl trophy will be raised by the winning team at MetLife Stadium. The new stadium in New Jersey is the first stadium that is home to two National Football League teams – the New York Jets and the New York Giants. The 2010/2011 season was the first for the teams on their new turf.
MetLife Stadium opened five months ahead of schedule in the spring 2010. Crowd pleasers such as Jon Bon Jovi and The Eagles performed the first concert in the stadium to a full house of 82,500 fans before the football players took the field. The XLVIII Super Bowl will crown the stadium’s first four years of success.
The MetLife Stadium project showcased the wide range of Skanska’s construction capabilities from building and construction management to concrete and steel erection. It was a nostalgia trip for Skanska’s steel erection experts who in 1974 did all steel work for the old Meadowlands arena.
And the team was assisted by the latest from technology. BIM (Building Information Modeling) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) were key success factors.
Thousands of precast concrete elements were electronically traceable through the supply chain via RFID from the manufacturing plant. The steel structure comprises 17,000 pieces of steel at a total weight of 25,500 tons.
“BIM and RFID allowed us to accelerate the job. It also helped us to get all goods just in time. We had no place to stock material,” says Sean Szatkowski, Skanska’s Project Director, and adds:
“It is amazing to think that if we had had to change just one bolt for say USD 10 on each seat, it would have resulted in a million dollar issue.”
Safety is a major issue in an elevated project. The stadium was completed in 4.5 million man hours without any serious incidents.
“We were very strict that subcontractors had to comply with our Injury Free Environment policy or they had to leave,” says Sean.
Securing common goals and diversity
To ensure that everyone was working towards common goals, a Project Labor Agreement was negotiated with the trade unions. And to secure diversity, about one third of workforce and subcontractor firms were Women and Minority Business Enterprises (WMBE). Sean was also active as a lecturer at Skanska’s Construction Management Building Blocks – an educational program aimed at making WMBE’s more competitive.
The owner could not be more satisfied with Skanska’s performance from start to finish.
“The quality of construction is well beyond standard and with an exemplary safety record. Both owner clubs have strong values, so Skanska’s business ethics, environmental and safety approach was crucial to their selection to build our new stadium, says Mark Lamping.
“You can judge the quality of construction in many ways. But whatever parameter you choose, this is a model project from schedule and budget standpoints as well as the inclusion of minority subcontractors and high morale. No one could have done a better job. Skanska and its people have done great things here. I could not have imagined the results we see today.”
The events and crowds that the MetLife Stadium attracts prove its top notch position.
“A new stadium is very important. Competition for sports and entertainment dollars is getting tougher. We do not only compete with other NFL teams but other stadiums in this market for other events. With the new stadium, we have a competitive edge for a wide range of events,” Mark Lamping concludes.

02. MetLife Stadium har 27 500 parkeringsplatser och tar 82 500 åskådare.
03. MetLife Stadium i East Rutherford, New Jersey, är hemmaarena för både New York Giants och New York Jets.
